Etsy mandates unedited photos and AI disclosure
The Verge Creator Economyhigh confidence
Why it matters
- →Etsy enforces unedited primary photos to prevent misleading synthetic imagery from dominating search results.
- →Functional guides must be human-created with verified results, closing a loophole for AI-generated instructions.
- →Bot-created listings are banned, and detection tools will flag ambiguous uploads for seller review.
Etsy announced stricter policies requiring at least one unedited photo of the actual item in every listing to combat misleading AI-generated content. The platform will use detection tools to prompt sellers to disclose AI usage, while banning listings created by bots entirely. Functional guides such as patterns and recipes must now be human-created work accompanied by proof of an actual result. Selling AI-generated art is still allowed provided it is clearly disclosed, but the core requirement for physical accuracy aims to restore trust in product representation.

Judge allows NAACP lawsuit over xAI pollution to proceed
xAI's attempt to dismiss the NAACP's Clean Air Act lawsuit failed after a federal judge ruled that its gas turbines are not exempt mobile sources and that plaintiffs have standing. This legal setback confirms that AI infrastructure operators cannot bypass environmental permitting by classifying heavy industrial equipment as temporary or mobile. The ruling forces xAI to face scrutiny over air quality impacts at its Colossus data center, setting a precedent for how large-scale compute facilities are regulated under existing environmental laws.
