TechCrunch AIhigh confidence
Why it matters
- →Deepgram integrates Pipecat to offer a more complete real-time voice infrastructure stack.
- →The acquisition keeps a key open-source orchestration tool under active development within a larger entity.
- →Launch of RCS protocol aims to standardize metadata handling for voice agents across the ecosystem.
Deepgram has acquired Daily, the creator of the popular open-source voice infrastructure framework Pipecat, though financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition brings Pipecat’s real-time orchestration capabilities into Deepgram’s portfolio, complementing its speech-to-text and text-to-speech models. Co-founder Kwindla Kramer cited Deepgram’s commitment to keeping Pipecat open source as a key factor in the decision. Alongside the deal, the companies launched the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS), an open protocol for voice agent metadata. This move consolidates Deepgram’s position in the growing voice AI market, following its recent unicorn status.

Judge allows NAACP lawsuit over xAI pollution to proceed
xAI's attempt to dismiss the NAACP's Clean Air Act lawsuit failed after a federal judge ruled that its gas turbines are not exempt mobile sources and that plaintiffs have standing. This legal setback confirms that AI infrastructure operators cannot bypass environmental permitting by classifying heavy industrial equipment as temporary or mobile. The ruling forces xAI to face scrutiny over air quality impacts at its Colossus data center, setting a precedent for how large-scale compute facilities are regulated under existing environmental laws.
